Understanding the fundamental rules and mechanics of Rootelo.

An Alternative Ladder

This platform offers a distinct competitive lens through which to view player performance, providing an alternative ranking experience specifically designed for the Root Digital League. Known for its informal yet highly competitive spirit, the league organizes established seasons where every match is played to the bitterest end. You can join the adventure at any time: visit their official site to subscribe, follow the community rules, and start competing for seasonal awards.

The Scoring Engine

To ensure fairness in a four-player format, this leaderboard uses a multi-player Elo model. The journey begins with a base rating of 1200 points. Unlike a simple win-count, the engine evaluates the “strength of schedule”: defeating high-ranked opponents boosts a rating significantly, while losing as the favorite results in a steeper drop. The Elo score is permanent, serving as a continuous record of performance over time.

The Dynamic Phases

The K-Factor sets the maximum Elo change per match. Using an exponential decay model, ratings calibrate quickly in early games before smoothly stabilizing as experience grows.

Starting No games K = 75 Initiation for previously unranked players.
Returning No games K = 50 Soft-reset for previous season ranked players.
Calibrating 10 games K = 50 High mobility while establishing your rank.
Active 20 games K = 31 Steady decay as match count grows.
Stabilizing 30 games K = 24 Fine-tuning near skill equilibrium.
Veterans 40+ games K = 20 Minimum floor for long-term rank stability.

The Tier System

After your 10-game calibration phase, you officially join the ranks and unlock your Tier based on your current Elo rating:

The Seasonal Lifecycle

While Elo scores are persistent, seasonal game counts are reset. To reclaim their Tier, every player must complete the calibration phase at the start of each season, where restored volatility allows for rapid movement. At a season’s end, a Loyalty Bonus is equally distributed to all players with at least one recorded match. By rebalancing the global pool, this system combats deflation and can even secure a qualification at the finish line.

The Championship Finale

Once the leaderboard is frozen, the top four qualified players advance to a single, all-random match to crown the League Champion. Played either live or asynchronously at the participants' discretion, this final clash provides a definitive conclusion to the current season.

A Living Project

This system is a living project. Formulas and features may evolve to better reflect the competitive reality of the game. If you have any questions, suggestions, or want to discuss the math behind the ranks, join the conversation on the Woodland Warriors.
